Outdoor Seasonal Allergies

Apr 23, 2018

Have you noticed that your car has a coating of yellow powder on it? Welcome to allergy season! Oak, hickory, and sycamore pollen is on the rise! What can we do to help our kids through this?

Here are a few allergy control steps to keep in mind:

Step 1: Avoid unnecessary exposure

Be sure to keep your windows to avoid outdoor pollen blowing into your home. Also change your shoes and clothes after being outside so as not to bring outdoor pollen inside with you.

Step 2: Use mechanical removal

Take a quick shower or bath after being outside to remove pollen stuck in your hair and eyelashes. You can also use a nasal saline rinse to remove pollen inside your nose.

Step 3: Medication

Over the counter (OTC) oral medications come in a variety of name brands and generics. Keep in mind first generation OTC medications such as benadryl and chlorpheniramine can be sedating and are best used at night before bedtime. Second generation medications including loratadine, certiriine, and fexofenadine are less sedating and can have daytime use. OTC topical medications include steroid nasal sprays (such as budesonide and fluticasone) and eye drops (ketotifen).
